Wednesday - It was so wonderful to see so many students in pink for the day. We started the day by writing 3 kind words. At the end of the day Ms. Kolkman shared a wordle (word picture) that was created using our words. The more times a word was used by the students the larger the word appears on the image.

Thursday - Using oil pastels and pencil crayons students created a landscape of the Calgary area from the Indigenous perspective, before European settlers. This art will be on Iris soon so that you can admire your child's work.

Friday - In Health we learned that we have many strengths. After a discussion students had the opportunity to start working on some writing to accompany this concept. Please discuss the worksheet with your child. We do not need the sheets to be returned.

Pink Shirt Day - Wednesday

Pink shirt day is on Wednesday, February 26. Students are encouraged to wear pink (or red) as a symbol for standing up to bullying and for kindness.

Here are a couple of resources explaining the history and the significance behind Pink Shirt Day:

100th Day of School

Image result for 100 days smarter

Today we celebrated our 100th day of school. We started the day by completing two sentences:
I wish I had 100 ...
I don't want ...
The answers were funny, thoughtful, and intriguing.

After lunch the students created art using the numerals in 100.

We also used an aging app and wrote about what we would be like at 100.
Mrs. Holman has a few more wrinkles.

Finally to end a very busy day we completed a special 100 day art project with our buddies.

She is back ...

Ms. Kolkman has rejoined room 20 until April 17th.
We were all very excited to see her yesterday.
Ms. Kolkman is looking forward to catching up with everyone.

Baking Bread

Today, we baked bread as part of a Science experiment. Heat changed the ingredients into a delicious loaf of bread, We used Mrs. Holman's bread machine for this activity and a vegan bread recipe (water, yeast, sugar, canola oil, flour, and salt). The bread smelled wonderful as it baked in the class. Everyone had a chance to taste the bread and almost everyone enjoyed it. After our tasting we used our 5 senses and wrote about the experience.

Boiler Room Visit

On Tuesday, students went in small groups with a teacher and Mr. Lam (our school caretaker) to the basement to see the schools heating system up close. Captain John Palliser is heated with a boiler system.

Make an Insulator

Insulation Experiment

Today, our classes tested 4 different insulating materials (styrofoam, cotton, foil, and air). Ask your child which was the best insulator (kept an ice cube from melting for the longest)! Here is a link to the experiment that we tried in class so you can have a better idea of what we did: https://www.teachengineering.org/activities/view/the_best_insulator

As a home project, we are asking each child to create their own insulator out of materials that you have at home. The aim is to keep an ice cube from melting and time how long it takes to melt. In class, we checked our ice cubes every half hour.

Please have your child bring their insulator to school between Tuesday February 18 and Friday February 21. Students are expected to be able to speak to their project: What type of insulation did you use? Did you try more than one material? How long did it take for your ice cube to melt?

Thank you for your continued support!

3rd Great Lesson

The Coming of Humans

Today we heard the 3rd Great Lesson story. The Third Great Lesson in the Montessori tradition is known as the Coming of Humans, or the Timeline of Man. This lesson focuses on the skills and gifts that set humans apart from other animals in the world.
Beyond the fundamental abilities and characteristics that define humans, students also explore the history of many of the more recent developments that set humans apart; transitioning from foraging to agriculture, developing tools, and creating cave art.
After hearing the story we created drawings using carcoal. Our pictures were of what is important to us.
