Hearing

Today we explored some hearing activities.

Looking at books about sound and hearing.

Using the Montessori bells to grade (order) sounds from high to low.

Matching animal ears with the correct animal.

Guessing what might be inside the egg to make the sound.

Sorting sounds you can hear and sounds you cannot.
Please sign and return this sheet so we can add it to our Learning Journal.
Learning Journals will go home at the end of the year and they are a wonderful collection of your child's work for the year.

We also completed a Smartboard lesson on hearing.

Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day honors the legacy of Residential Schools, Survivors, Intergenerational Survivors and those that did not survive as an act of Reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day honors the legacy of the 2013 St. Joseph Mission Residential School commemoration event, held in Williams Lake, B.C.  It grew out of a former student’s account of having her brand-new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school.
Wearing an Orange Shirt is meant to recognize the harm done to Residential School students, and show a commitment to the principle that every child matters.
The official Orange Shirt Day date is September 30th. A date in September was chosen because it is the time of year when children were taken from their homes to Residential Schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for policies and resources that support diversity for the coming school year.
Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools, and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

Library

We went to the library for the first time today. We will have library time every Friday to exchange books. To start the year students will be allowed to sign out 1 picture book. These books are meant for students to engage with in the 3 ways of reading:

Read the picture (looking at the pictures and creating a story)
Retell the story (If it is familiar retell the story)
Read the words (often this may require an adult to support them)

Terry Fox Run Tomorrow

Our Terry Fox Run will happen tomorrow. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather.
Mrs. Holman and Ms. Le will wear 1 item of silly clothes for every $10 or classes raise.
You are welcome to send in an item with a $10 donation or
students can choose from a selection of items that the teachers will provide.
So far we have raises $21 towards our goal of  $100 between the 2 classrooms.

Your child came home with a tattoo today.

They also brought home a sticker that they may choose to wear. We talked about putting in the name of someone they know that had/has cancer or writing Terry. The choice is yours to make as a family.

Sorting

Students learned about sorting today. We practiced as a class sorting objects by one attribute and two attributes. The curriculum expectations for sorting are as follows:

Grade 1 - Sort objects, using one attribute, and explain the sorting rule.
Grade 2 - Sort a set of objects, using two attributes, and explain the sorting rule.

Students were then given shapes to sort. They were given the choice to sort by one attribute or two (end of unit expectations were made clear), and then they completed a sort and explained their sorting rule.

Big Problem Little Problem

Today we talked about PROBLEMS.

Problems come in different sizes.

Small problems might cause your feelings to get hurt.

Small problems happen all the time like when someone budges in front of you in line or you cannot find your favorite pencil.

Kids can try to solve small problems on their own.

Big problems are things that make you feel scared, in danger, or unsafe, or if someone is hurt. You should tell an adult about a big problem right away.

We also discussed ways we can solve little problems. Please help your child to recognize small problems that they can solve on their own. This will help them become more independent and confident.

Representing Numbers

Part of the math curriculum in to represent and describe numbers,
concretely, pictorially and symbolically.
Grade one students should be able to this to 20 by the end of the year.
Grade two students should be able to do this to 100 by the end of the year.

We have been practicing representing numbers in a variety of ways.

Expected vs. Unexpected

What a funny lesson we had today! Mrs. Holman surprised the students by demonstrating some very unexpected behaviours. She walked into the quiet classroom, where both classes were meeting with Ms. Li, and she was talking loudly about a party on her cell phone. She then burped, rather loudly and rudely in front of the class. Next she sat on a table and then laid down on it. It was very weird and many students were wondering what was happening. When Mrs. Holman picked her nose and wiped it on the carpet (yuck) half of the students erupted in laughter while the other half looked on with disgust. After some more loud talking she sat on her chair backwards. Finally, she picked her nose and ate it, ugh.

Good news, Mrs. Holman was acting! She did not really pick her nose and nobody was on the phone with her. The class discussed how the incident was funny but also made them feel uncomfortable. Unexpected behaviours make us uncomfortable. We talked about expected ways Mrs. Holman should have behaved and why these expectations are part of our class.

Please continue the conversation about expected and unexpected behaviours in your home.  Image result for expected vs unexpected behaviors
